Name: Lee Dempsey & Thor Gillund
Location: King Street East District, Toronto Canada
Size: 1,400 square ft interior + 1,200 ft terrace
Years lived in: 4.5 yrs, owned

If you’ve ever shied away from condos because of their tendency to feel like stacked residential cubicles, take a peek at Lee & Thor’s expansive city domicile! They fell for this particular condo as soon as they saw the sweeping walls of floor-to-ceiling glass, which give them an opportunity to invite the surrounding cityscape inside. Both avid travelers and fans of big city living, Lee and Thor have a style that artfully blends contemporary metropolitan chic with zen garden accents.

Since the private wrap-around terrace stretches the full length of two sides of their home, the square footage of livable space is almost doubled during warmer months. The guest room serves as an office for Thor (an engineer) and recording studio for Lee (a voiceover actor) when not occupied by visitors, who are easily accommodated with a stylish, custom-built wall bed & spa-inspired guest bathroom.

Plants, grasses, fruits, and rustic wood details offset the mostly modern furniture and the industrial design of their unit. Selecting art and décor that would suit the scale and grandeur of the open concept living/dining area was tricky, but the oversized planters and panoramic photography were a perfect find. Adding to the luxurious feel of the condo are lighting fixtures wired to change colors by remote control via cell phone, as well as the custom-made aluminum covers Thor designed for the sofa, chair arms and ottoman so that they could forgo conventional side tables and keep the spacious, open feel of the living/dining area.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Dramatic yet comfortable.

Inspiration: We travel a lot, so we wanted to capture some of the things we loved on vacation, like the sleek interior of a NYC boutique hotel or the relaxing calm of a pool deck in Maui.

Favorite Element: Hands down the terrace. Finding a condo in downtown Toronto that also has an amazing outdoor space is next to impossible, so we feel very fortunate that we didn't have to compromise on our wish list.

Biggest Challenge: Washing all those windows!

What Friends Say: "OMG."

Biggest Embarrassment: Hoisting the 10-foot canvas print up the side of the building because it didn't fit in the 9-foot elevator or the stairwell.

Proudest DIY: The landscaping that we try to change up every summer, and the aluminum covers that Thor custom made for the living room set.

Biggest Indulgence: The living room set by Nienkamper.

Best Advice: If you love it, buy it.

Dream Sources: Dedon, Bulthaup, Restoration Hardware, Frette, Design Within Reach, Bang & Olufsen — to name a few!
