Name: Barbara
Location: New Orleans

My fiancé and I moved into our new, more spacious apartment on the edge of the Warehouse District in the City of New Orleans in September. It's a run of the mill apartment with white chalky walls and beige carpet, but it does have the luxury of high ceilings, windows that let in lots of light, and a close proximity to the French Quarter and both our offices.

When we moved in I had a bigger space to decorate, a male cohabitant to think about, and an evolving style aesthetic, but one big problem – a not so generous budget. New furniture was out of the question, so was spending more than a hundred dollars on any one piece of art, and it is not worth the time and energy to repaint the walls for a one year lease.

I’ve tried to add more masculine elements by throwing in touches or darker, stronger colors. For instance, we just painted a Craigslist dresser black and distressed it so the original dark red wood stain shows through. Most of my small pieces have been picked up on vacations, or purchased from Pier 1, World Market, Hobby Lobby, or DIYed. My favorite piece in our home is the DIY headboard we made from a salvaged mantle. It turned out amazing, and it was a fun project for my future husband and I to tackle together. I also love the pieces we chose to sit on top of the mantle: a print of a New Orleans style shotgun home I picked up from a local artist in Jackson Square, a hip watercolor a friend got me for Christmas, and a yard sale mirror I’ve had since college.

Our apartment is ever evolving, but I am happy here in our little home, and am proud to say we are building it together and it is a reflection of us as individuals and as a couple.

Thanks, Barbara!
