Back to Basics: What Does it Mean to You?

Back to Basics: What Does it Mean to You?

Welcome to a new month! August is Back to Basics time here at Apartment Therapy, meaning we'll have loads of posts on organizing, cleaning, decorating and setting up your home in the coming weeks. When I think about getting back to basics, I think mainly about simplifying; it's paring down, being more mindful, doing things better and more easily. Read on for three ways to do this in your home:

Less Clutter
Probably the most obvious application of back to basics is the concept of less. Less visual clutter, fewer possessions to clean and keep track of, not as much to worry about.

I'm noticing a trend for this lately in my own life. As much as I love a gallery wall, I'm favoring single, bold pieces of artwork and crisp, bare walls over the mix-and-match look these days. Less colour, too: the other day I took some (turquoise) cushions off my (white) bed and immediately felt better.

Quality Over Quantity
This is just another (smarter) way of having less: have better. It's one set of linen sheets for every three of poly-blend, a good set of tableware that you save up for, and really doing your research before you make that big-ticket purchase for a bed or sofa.

This one I'm still working on, to be honest. Though I've got it down at home, when it comes to my wardrobe or even my monthly food budget, I'm easily distracted and somewhat greedy— I want quality and quantity.

Smarter Solutions
In terms of interior design, back to basics is about making smart choices and changes around the home. Rearranging your bedroom for optimum rest, brushing up on color theory or evaluating the lighting in your kitchen. In terms of your life, it's anything that makes things simpler, from getting out your bike (I'm a recent convert; when I think of the time I used to waste inefficiently walking!) to perfecting one classic, crowd-pleasing party recipe.

Over to you— in what ways do you "get back to basics" around the home? Is there anything particular you'd love for us to talk about here this month?
