8 Green Stores with Fabulous Felt

100 percent wool felt has a lot going for it—it's durable, renewable, naturally anti-bacterial, and moisture-resistant. It's also beautiful, and a number of green designers have tested the limits of how it can be used, creating rugs, wall hangings, ottomans, and even tape measures from this multi-purpose material. Here are some of our favorite wool felt applications along with where to find them.

Their products are made in Massachusetts, and they carry a whole bunch of cool modern designs, including felt wine racks, pillows, bowls, coasters, and book boxes (shown left, $120). You can order online through their store.

Melina Raissina's felt rugs are made from 100 percent wool and natural dyes. Melina and her husband Dodd own and operate a workshop in Iran, where the rugs are made, and a studio in San Francisco, where they sell them for $35 to $45 per square foot.

Seattle-based artist David Hamlin makes wall panels and screens from a variety of materials, including 100 percent wool felt. Shown left is the beautiful, bright red 068 Wall Panel. For more information, check out his website.

Based in Boston, Filz Felt imports 100 percent wool from Germany and uses it to make rugs, tabletop items, pillows, and accessories. They also sell felt by the roll in over 20 colors. The Felt Floor Mats, shown left, range from $50 to $750.

Located in the UK, Hidden Art Shop is a non-profit group that promotes emerging designers. Although they emphasize local artists and businesses, they do ship internationally. The Stella Felt Rug, shown left, is €350.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, this green store has a strong online presence. They focus on modern sustainable products, and they sell a few different felt items, including this Wool Felt Trivet for $26.50.

This is primarily an online stationery and paper shop, but they also sell a couple of felt pieces. (The name actually refers to the felt and wire materials used in the printmaking process.) The Felt Yard Stick is a smart design that's priced at $15.

This green catalog carries popular wool felted "stones" created by South African textile designer Ronel Jordaan. They can serve as ottomans or floor cushions, and there are two basic types: indoor and outdoor. Both cost between $300 and $700.
